Alex Ovechkin speared in the Ovies by Marc Staal (Video)

The New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals have played roughly 10,000 times (including the playoffs) since Alex Ovechkin entered the NHL.

Many of those games have featured Marc Staal attempting to shut down Ovechkin by any means necessary. And we were given yet another example of this on Tuesday night at MSG.

In the first period, Staal and Ovechkin were in close enough proximity to each other where Staal could jab his stick into the Capitals captain’s … uh, Ovies.

Well, at least it wasn't a puck this time.

Ovechkin doubled over briefly, and then went back at Staal to explain to him, in no uncertain terms, that this was unacceptable. Staal, for his part, skated away and didn't seem to heed this advice.

No penalties on the play. But Ovechkin did as he often does when gonaded … er, goaded, which is to do his talking on the scoreboard: He netted his sixth of the season minutes later, with a sprawling Staal attempting to thwart a pass from Nate Schmidt that Ovechkin converted at 15:45 of the first.
